Welcome to Dandenong Little Athletics.

Little Athletics is a great family activity, where parents get to be involved in the fitness and physical development of their children. There is no requirement for natural athletic ability, but just a willingness to have a go and do their best. The atmosphere is one of friendliness, encouragement and good sportsmanship, with focus on individuals doing their own personal best. Achieving “personal bests” is highly praised and recognised with level badges through the season, in this way all athletes get acknowledged for achievement.

We value family time and endeavour to run events as smoothly and quickly as possible. For this to happen well it requires the assistance of all families. See parent participation section below for further details.

Don’t count the days, make the days count – Muhammad Ali

During a recent hospital visit with one of my children I was inspired with this quote on the wall. Let’s make the time with our family special, and look after our own bodies so that we can get maximum enjoyment together. As parents we can also encourage each other to be good role models for our children

Safety of Children

Of utmost importance is the safety and wellbeing of Children. It is an expectation that we provide a safe place, free of bullying, inappropriate language or any other form of abuse. Please report any inappropriate behaviour to one of the committee members. All committee members hold a current Working With Children Check and it is required for all key volunteers to obtain one. We recommend that all parents obtain this free card.

Parent Participation

It is an expectation that a parent/guardian be on site during all events while a child in their care is participating, and to also assist in basic tasks needed to run the program. The tasks expected may range from setting up, measuring throws, operating timing equipment and pack-up. No-one will be asked to do what they are not capable of, and there are people available to show how each task is done. We will be trying some new methods to share the load this year. I am happy to listen to any constructive comments regarding the way things are run.

Anticipated Typical Saturday timetable

7:30-8:30am       Setup Team (later start if more involved)

8:30-8:45am       Parents and athletes arrive, and parents sign in for duties

8:45-9:00am       Warm-up for athletes, announcements and awards

9:00-11:00am     Athletic program, generally 5 events each age group

11:00-11:30am   Pack-up team (depending on team size)

NOTE: Distance events (1500m and walk) may be scheduled to commence at 8:45am rather than 9am, in which case athletes should arrive earlier to warm up

Finally I urge you to share your great experiences with family, friends and neighbours as the club continues to be a positive contributor in our local community.

Looking forward to an exciting season

David Daff
